House Tips

Every house is unique, these tips are to serve as your “help on the way” to “make your [trip] easy.

Central Heat/AC

There are two thermostats for each zone in the house. One is located upstairs in the main bedroom and one downstairs is located to the left outside of the bedroom door. The HVAC works best when the two zones are set to the same temperature. Please note that air conditioning systems are typically designed to accommodate up to a 20° difference between the outside air and inside air. If you have an exceptionally hot day (i.e. 100° F) , setting the thermostat extremely low (60° F) will not achieve the set temperatures.

Clothes Washer/Dryer

The only things that may be different are how to add detergent and to start the washer. To do this, just  lift the lid and gently pull out the soap tray which is located towards the back, between the lid’s hinges. To start, be sure the soap tray is pushed back in, close the lid, select your cycle and settings, then push and hold the start button until you hear a click as this is the sound of the lid locking. As for the dryer, if it stops short of completely drying your clothes, the timed dry setting will work much better.

Coffee Pot

To use the Cuisinart coffee pot:

  1. Make sure the coffee pot is on by pressing the on switch on the bottom right side of the coffee pot
  2. Check that there is enough water in the respective reservoir (the single cup reservoir is located on the back of the coffee pot and the pot reservoir is in the typical location under the lid behind where the coffee grounds go – this one is easiest to fill with the sink sprayer)
  3. Make sure the knob is pointed to “brew”
  4. Press “Brew” once for the full pot or press “Brew” twice for a single cup (until the cup sizes light up on the single cup side).
  5. To brew a single cup, select the cup size you would like to brew and wait for the morning (or afternoon) magic.

If all else fails, or if you want to brew multiple pots of coffee, there is a standard coffee pot in the lower cabinet between the refrigerator and the stove.

Dishwasher

Please be so kind as to help us keep our. newer dishwasher new by rinsing your dishes and pots and pans before loading them into the dishwasher. Grease from meat (or anything that hardens as it cools) is very hard on the dishwasher as well as the plumbing in the house.

The dishwasher is a little tricky, it has a “Power Boost” button. This is NOT the power button, it’s just a cycle option. To start the dishwasher, select your cycle from the left side of the panel and push the play button on the right side for it to start.

Games/Arcade

Board Games

These are located in the top of the main level closet (across from the laundry room).

Cornhole

Weather-dependent, cornhole bags are often brought in the house and are located with the board games in the main level closet, however, they are often kept outside under the house on top of the putt-putt guitar fun hole/cage. The light switch for the cornhole area is located in the outdoor room with the two chairs and table up on the wall. above the shades (the grey switch near the sign that points out the volume control).

Multicade Table

No coins are needed, it may just need to be plugged in if it is not already.

Putt-Putt

See above for locating cornhole bags to find the golf clubs and for the light switch location.

Grill

For your convenience we have an outdoor charcoal grill with a charcoal chimney so you should not need to purchase lighter fluid. Charcoal is not included.

Kayak

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK, there is a wheeled cart for the kayak, a life jacket is highly recommended though not provided as different people need different sizes. If you do not have one with you, either rent a life jacket from a local outdoor sports company or purchase one to use with the kayak. Marine West, next to the Food Lion in Nags Head, sells them. For more information on kayaking in the Outer Banks and safety risks, visit https://www.outerbanks.com/kayaking.html, please take note that according to this site, ”the most important thing to remember is to be mindful of rip currents. While central Outer Banks beaches…usually put up red flags during rip current conditions, more remote beaches [this includes south of the beach access]… may not have any warning markers at all. The best way to avoid rip currents is to avoid highly windy days, where currents can form in mere minute”

Kitchen

The kitchen should have everything you need and more. In addition to standard appliances (blender, coffee pot, coffee bean grinder, toaster, hand mixer, etc.) You will find additional, appliances including a KitchenAid Stand Mixer with splash guard and 3 mixing attachments; KitchenAid Blender; Cuisinart Smart Stick (mini food processor and immersion blender attachments); Cuisinart knife sharpener; Hamilton Beach crock pots (one large and a trio set). There are plenty of utensils, including ones for children, and multiple pots and pans – including a crab pot – and more than enough plates to accommodate the number of guests.

The left side of each of the lower cabinets in the kitchen are labeled telling what you should find in them. Please help renters who come after you by putting things back in their dedicated locations.

Highchair

The high chair is a Graco DuoDiner and is designed to fit children from infant through toddler years. The seat restraints should be located under the seat part of the highchair. Just use the two side lever/buttons to lift the seat off the base. A video showing how to attach the restraints is here.

Linens

Linens include 8 bath towels, 8 washcloths, 4 hand towels, 3 bathroom floor mats, and 6 kitchen towels. Beds will be made when you arrive, however, towels will be located in the black tote under the white side table to the left as you come into the house. Please bring beach towels.

Pack and Play

For those traveling with babies, there is a pack and play that you’re welcome to take out to the beach with you. Please just try to get off as much sand as possible before packing it away and bringing it back inside. We do have a full sized crib, however, if you would like this set up for your stay, please just send a message to confirm it’s assembled for your stay.

Parking off street

Though off-street parking is acceptable, in the event of an emergency, please park across the street so that you’re not blocking a fire truck from the hydrant in the front yard.

Pets

Our pets are a part of our family and and we respect that yours are a part of yours so leaving them at home may not be an option. This is why we’re pet friendly! There is however an additional fee for pets and we do ask that you clean up after your pets.

Radio

The radio has indoor & outdoor speakers with SiriusXM but it can be a little tricky.

  • Power: To turn on press the button to the left “Main Zone,” note, if “main zone” is powered off, music may not come on.
  • Speakers: you can turn on one at a time or both at the same time):
    • Speakers “A” turn on/off the indoor audio and the volume knob is the white knob next to the unit
    • Speakers “B” turn on/off the outdoor audio and the volume knob is located downstairs in the room with the two chairs and table. It is higher but there is a sign that displays “volume”
  • Input: The radio has, AM/FM, Sirius/XM, and bluetooth options. To control the input, use the input knob next to the volume. To turn on bluetooth, press the center button of the bluetooth box that is plugged into the receiver and connect via your phone/device.

Trash/Recycling

Mondays – Recycling
Please roll out the recycling cart on Sunday night.

Mondays and Thursdays – Trash
Please roll out the trash cart(s) on Sunday and Wednesday nights.

NOTE –

  1. pickups can start as early as 3am in the summer
  2. place cans at the edge of the driveway with handles facing the house (facing the wrong direction makes it hard for the collection truck to pick up cans and destroys the cans)
